Abstract:

In this experiment, we have examined how the nonbreaking wave (NBSW) eddy viscosity ν_T varies with the background turbulence. The experiment was carried out at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) SUSTAIN facility equipped with Air-Sea Interaction Saltwater Tank (ASIST), 15x1x1 m, filled to a 0.5 m depth with fresh water. The current speed was monitored with a current meter (Infinity-EM, Model AEM-USB, JFE Advantech, with a 10 Hz sampling rate). We have carried out additional surface turbulent kinetic energy dissipation (TKED) measurements using an IR camera. This dataset contains the along- and cross-stream direction wave slopes for five runs with different mean current speeds. Also included are the IR images used to calculate TKED under different forcing conditions. The data are organized by type, accompanied by a detailed description of deployment and processing.

Purpose:

To measure the turbulence kinetic energy dissipation below the gravity-capillary wave.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time [s], slope_x (slope in the streamwise direction, [m/m]), and slope_y (slope in the cross-stream direction, [m/m]).

Methods:

The turbulent kinetic energy dissipation (TKED) or ε, was measured at a fixed location of x/M=37.5 from the grid. The TKED was measured with a microstructure shear sensor (VMP200, Rockland Scientific, with a sampling rate of 512 Hz). In each experiment, the horizontally mounted and upstream pointing sensor measured TKED over a depth range of 0.005 < z < 0.2 m. The TKED was derived then from the measured velocity shear spectrum, Ψ(k), using the standard approach. We used a FLIR T650sc LWIR 640 x 480-pixel resolution camera with 20 mK NETD, 30 Hz frame rate, and 14-bit dynamic range. The IR camera was collocated with the VMP200 and mounted 0.5 m above the water. The TKED dissipation was obtained from the IR images by a standard PIV cross-correlations method (PIVLab). The wave slopes were measured with Laser Wave Slope (LWS) gauge model 201 designed and built by the National Water Research Institute, Canada. The LWS was located x/M=23.5 downstream from the grid and L=1.3 m upstream from the VMP200.
