Abstract:

This dataset contains measurements of whole-animal performance using swim tunnel respirometry and includes maximal sustained swimming speed, minimum metabolic rate, maximum metabolic rate, and aerobic scope following acclimation to different temperatures (20, 24, 28, and 32 degrees Celsius). Acclimation temperatures used in this study are directly linked to temperatures that mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) experience in the wild based on popup satellite archival tags.

Purpose:

To determine the effects of temperature acclimation (20, 24, 28, and 32 degrees Celcius) on metabolic rate, aerobic scope, and maximal sustained swimming speed.

Data Parameters and Units:

The Excel file "Effects of temperature on mahi swim performance" contains fish biometric information and includes - Fish ID (Individual ID), Mass (grams), Fork length (centimeters), Standard metabolic rate (milligrams of oxygen per kilogram per hour), Maximal metabolic rate (milligrams of oxygen per kilogram per hour), Aerobic scope (milligrams of oxygen per kilogram per hour), Maximal sustained swimming speed (body lengths per second), Optimal sustained swimming speed (body length per second), Minimum cost of transport (milligrams of oxygen per kilogram per meter), Maximum cost of transport (milligrams of oxygen per kilogram per meter), Day of exposure (Day number), and Age of fish (Days). Please note that cells with no data mean that there was a poor fit to this data and so it was not valid.

Methods:

In this study, mahi were acclimated to a range of temperatures they experience in the wild (20, 24, 28, and 32 degrees Celcius) for 5 to 27 days. Following acclimation, mahi were introduced to a swim tunnel respirometer, where they were acclimated overnight prior to swimming tests at one body length per second. Swimming tests were used to obtain measurements of standard metabolic rate, maximum metabolic rate, aerobic scope, maximum sustained swimming speed, optimal swimming speed, cost of transport at maximum sustained swimming speed, and minimum cost of transport. During the swimming test, the speed was incrementally increased every twenty-minute interval at half body length intervals.
