Abstract:

In 2014 the Columbia University National Center for Disaster Preparedness surveyed 720 households in southeastern Louisiana. The aim was to assess the social and public health impacts of the Deepwater Horizon disaster on families and children and to examine characteristics related to social resilience/vulnerability. This dataset is a follow-up survey with the same households in 2016 with a total of 482 of those households who agreed to follow-up and were reached again. Questions asked to respondents deal with exposure to the spill, health effects to the adult, health effects to the child, risk behaviors, academic effects, sense of community, family relationships, trust in information sources, moderators and cumulative trauma, compensation from the spill, and demographics.

Purpose:

As part of a larger mixed-methods approach, the purpose of this effort is to collect quantitative data using a longitudinal approach for communities in south Louisiana. Overall objectives of the project include: Understanding the public health and social impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill with a focus on children and their families and identifying attributes of children and families associated with resilience to negative disaster impacts, as well as attributes of children and families associated with vulnerability to negative disaster impacts.

Data Parameters and Units:

The dataset includes questionnaire survey data. The file RCYC_Wave_2_Codebook_revised.txt is a codebook and describes the survey, in terms of types of questions, and codes by which answers are supplied and recorded. The file RCYC_wave2.csv provides the answers to questions and other relevant details such as health impacts, social impacts, household characteristics. Respondents have been assigned a Respondent Identifier (RID) which is based on a randomly assigned number and the parish in which the respondent lived in when first recruited to the study. The following acronyms for the parishes in the study include: PO = Plaquemines Parish OR = Orleans Parish TE = Terrebonne Parish JE = Jefferson Parish LA = Lafourche Parish TA = St. Tammany Parish VN = Vermillion Parish For further detail on the question format, how answers were classified, and other information please see the codebook. Note: RCYC is the acronym for the project. The codebook provided in this dataset is for Wave 2 of the RCYC study. Wave 2 was done between 2016 and 2017, and Wave 3 was done in 2018.
