Abstract:

In situ cores created using unoiled Pensacola Beach sand and Pensacola Beach sand with the addition of weathered crude oil (GRIIDC dataset R5.x278.000:0010) were incubated in the laboratory. A trough with dimensions 90 x 50 x 40 cm and a computer-controlled pump worked as a tide simulator to mimic Pensacola Beach conditions. Oxygen and carbon dioxide were measured every 15 minutes using a LICOR LI-804A CO2 gas analyzer and Hach rigid 02 optodes. Purpose:

Because the degradation of buried oil is relatively slow, the effect of tidal pumping on buried oil could not be investigated in-situ. The degradation rates of the buried oil instead were quantified in a laboratory tide simulator that mimicked the natural tidal groundwater oscillation and air movement through the beach sand.
