Abstract:

This dataset contains Atlantic Bumper (Chloroscombrus chrysurus) diet, growth and condition data collected on the R/V Point Sur cruise PS17_02 (PTS03) in the northern Gulf of Mexico from 2016-07-24 to 2016-07-30. Atlantic Bumper larvae were collected using a Bedford Institute of Oceanography Net Environmental Sampling System (BIONESS) at several stations that were either fully normoxic or experiencing bottom hypoxia. The BIONESS (0.25 m2 opening), a depth-discrete sampler was fitted with 333-µm mesh nets and 202-µm mesh nets. The dataset includes larvae diet, growth and condition data that were analyzed using morphometric measurements as well as station data. Other related station data (e.g., sampling time, station locations, oceanographic observations, etc.), net data (e.g., depth bins), and CTD profiles (temperature, salinity, depth) for BIONESS tows collected during the same cruise are available under GRIDDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI): R4.x260.000:0003 (DOI: 10.7266/N74T6GQD).

Purpose:

To describe the station, field, and environmental conditions that were encountered during each BIONESS tow on the summer field campaign of CONCORDE (July 23 - July 30, 2016). The station and field information was recorded at the start and end of the station by field personnel on the vessel whereas the environmental data (temperature, salinity, and oxygen) were collected with a CTD (SBE-19+) mounted to the BIONESS system. Oxygen measurements were used to determine if the hypoxia was present in order to compare the diet, growth and condition of larval Atlantic Bumper found in fully normoxic water columns versus water columns experiencing bottom hypoxia.
