Abstract:

The dataset contains the relative abundances of bacterial genera in dark and light treatments amended with oil and/or Corexit dispersant. The surface water was collected near the DWH site and incubated under the environmental conditions relevant to the northern Gulf of Mexico for 36 d. Light and dark treatments each include a control, those amended with Corexit alone, oil alone, and both oil and Corexit. Bacterial cells were collected at 0, 5, 10, 20, 27, and 36 days and analyzed by pyrosequencing. Purpose:

We hypothesized that sunlight was a contributing factor in shaping microbial community structures in oil-polluted waters during the DWH oil spill.

Data Parameters and Units:

Relative abundance of 129 bacterial genera from seawater under experimental treatments at different time points (5, 10, 20, 27, 36 days). Experimental treatments - 500 mL amber glass bottles (dark = wrapped in aluminum foil; light = natural sunlight, dispersant = Corexit 9500A at concentration of 10 ppm; oil = Light Louisiana Sweet crude oil at concentration of 200 ppm; oil + dispersant = Light Louisiana Sweet crude oil and Corexit at ratio of 20:1 (200:10 pm)
