Abstract:

High-speed, high-resolution stereoscopic images of bubbles and droplets rising from natural seeps were taken from the ROV Hercules near the seabed at two sites (MC118 and GC600) in July 2014. The images sequences allow the accurate determination of size and position of bubbles and droplets.

Purpose:

The in situ behavior of gas bubbles and oil droplets from natural oil seeps will help scientists understand and better predict the fundamental behavior or petroleum fluids in the ocean environment.

The data are organized by dive,camera, sample and sequence. Dives 1-3 were taken in leaseblock MC118 (28.852N, 88.492W). Dives 4-6 were taken at leaseblock GC600 (27.340N, 90.571W). Images from the master and slave camera are stored in separate folders within each of the six dive folders. Appendix A of the cruise report lists sample names (e.g., NA046-070-TAMUslow) and the corresponding dive designator (e.g. H1352). The Dive Plans are organized by dive designator in Appendix B and and the annotated Dive Reports are found in Appendix C. The Dive Reports contain useful information about the location of the cameras relative to the seabed and the plumes.
