Abstract:

This dataset contains the model output that supports the paper: Rayson, M. D., Gross, E. S., & Fringer, O. B. (2015). Modeling the tidal and sub-tidal hydrodynamics in a shallow, micro-tidal estuary. Ocean Modelling, 89, 29–44. Serial: 3757 DOI: 10.1016/j.ocemod.2015.02.002. The dataset consists of 366 NetCDF files containing model output from the Stanford Unstructured Nonhydrostatic Terrain-following Adaptive Navier-Stokes Simulator (SUNTANS). The output files contain hourly fields from March-August 2009. A supplemental file contains an analysis of 32 tidal and sub-tidal components for the model run.

Purpose:

This numerical simulation of the circulation in Galveston Bay, TX examines the tidal and sub-tidal hydrodynamics of a shallow, micro-tidal estuary. Galveston Bay is one of the largest estuaries on the Gulf coast. It provides substantial ecological services is surrounded by heavy industrial use and oil spills are common. The model is useful for studying the transport and fate of oil.
